Recently, scientists found that people who eat white rice after all this time have high blood pressure, and elevated levels of harmful fats and sugar in the blood, and low levels of good cholesterol. Wide waist circumference is one result of eating too much white rice.

"In the body, rice is very easily converted into sugar. Compared with grains that contain more fiber and has a low glycemic index," said Frank Hu, associate professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

His research involved 1900 men and women in Costa Rica, Hu and other researchers found that people who regularly swap a portion of white rice with whole grains had a 35 percent lower risk of triggering the symptoms of diabetes.
